Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning on Thursday in connection with the illegal mining cases in the Sahibganj district.
Pankaj Mishra, Soren’s party MLA from the Barhait Assembly constituency, has already been taken into custody by the ED. In the last few months, the investigation agency has carried out widespread searches across the country in connection with this case.
Last month, the ED informed a special court that it had detected illegal mining of stones worth more than Rs 1,000 crore in Sahibganj district and adjoining areas of Jharkhand, all controlled by Mishra. The ED, in its prosecution complaint (the equivalent of a chargesheet) to a PMLA court, said Mishra even controlled the installation of crushers and had a “fixed share in almost all mines” and transportation of material.
The searches were launched after the ED filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Mishra in March, claiming that he amassed “huge assets in his favour”.
