Concerning the Course
This can be a course on social norms, the foundations that glue societies collectively. It teaches tips on how to diagnose social norms, and tips on how to distinguish them from different social constructs, like customs or conventions. These distinctions are essential for efficient coverage interventions aimed to create new, useful norms or remove dangerous ones.
The course teaches tips on how to measure social norms and the expectations that assist them, and tips on how to resolve whether or not they trigger particular behaviors. The course is a joint Penn-UNICEF mission, and it consists of many examples of norms that maintain behaviors like youngster marriage, gender violence and sanitation practices.
That is Half 1 of the Social Norms, Social Change collection. In these lectures, I introduce all the essential ideas and definitions, equivalent to social expectations and conditional preferences, that assist us distinguish between various kinds of social practices like customs, descriptive norms and social norms.
Expectations and preferences will be measured, and these lectures clarify tips on how to measure them. Measurement is essential to understanding the character of the follow you might be going through, in addition to whether or not an intervention was or was not profitable, and why. In Half 2, we are going to put into follow all we’ve realized in Half 1.
